Our History

In July 1972, Maple Counseling, aptly named for its original location on Maple Drive, was opened in response to an increase in substance use identified by concerned parents and community members. Since its inception 50 years ago, we have helped over 300,000 people of all ages - from infants to the advanced elderly - to receive critical mental health services, expanding to support people of all ages and all areas throughout Los Angeles County. Now, via tele-health, our services are available to anyone in the state of California.

Maple Counseling provides programs and services to people of all ages, annually servicing over 7,700 individuals throughout the greater Los Angeles area and beyond. At our Center and via tele-health, we offer ongoing counseling in a safe space for adults through individual, couples, and group sessions, as well as to children, teens, and families. Eligible clients may receive psychiatric services through the Kapelovitz Psychiatry Program. In addition, Maple Counseling offers several community-based programs onsite at various schools including Community Circle, The Ted and Hedy Orden & Family Community-Based Preschool Mental Health Program, and School Based Counseling Services.

Using evidence-based interventions, Maple Counseling guides our clients toward self-awareness and improved emotional coping, with the goal of having a productive and fuller life experience. Maple Counseling clients receive treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, stress, and relational problems, among other mental health needs.

At the same time, Maple Counseling is considered a premier training institute in the field of mental health. All of our mental health services are provided by individuals working toward licensure in the state of California as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and Psychologist (PhD, PsyD) who are under supervision of highly experienced licensed clinicians. Like a fine teaching hospital, we develop the next generation of mental health providers through a structured training program to approximately 80 masters and doctoral-level graduate students each year.

Maple Counseling’s dual mission — to serve clients and to train clinicians — allows us to leverage low-cost clinical time of trainees and associates to provide high quality services that are accessible on a sliding fee scale. Our average fee is $25.00 per session and no one is turned away due to an inability to pay.

Our Board

Our Board of Directors and Ex-Officio Members is comprised of leading citizens who volunteer their time to provide oversight for the goals and mission of Maple Counseling. These community leaders and philanthropists are committed to addressing a great inequity in our society around access to affordable, quality mental health care. On an annual basis, Board members renew their commitment to support the organization through fundraising and working to identify new sources of revenue to allow Maple Counseling’s services to be offered on a sliding scale or free via community programs.

Our Donors, Our Partners

Since 1972, our donors and partners have made it possible for Maple Counseling to provide critical mental health services in the community, regardless of one’s income or medical insurance status. For half a century, the generosity of individuals, foundations, municipalities, and businesses has allowed Maple Counseling to offer our quality mental health services to our clients at a sliding scale or for free at various community partnership sites.

The Center is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose free or low-cost client fees are supplemented by individual donors, bequests, foundations, corporations, and municipal grants.
